„Protext“ is a platform, offering a fresh look at the contemporary dramaturgy, the possible spaces for theatre-making and the relationship between the text and the stage.

This pilot project of 36 Monkeys was launched in 2007 with two main tasks: to promote contemporary dramaturgy, to attract young audiences to alternative contemporary theatre forms, to expand the territory of art and culture.

The form "performance-reading" develops on the basis of classical stage reading, trying to update it and bring it closer to proto-performance. The result is an innate synthetic performance form, on the border between reading, site specific performance and performance.

The performance-reading form, developed and presented by the ProText team, aims to promote the development of "live" alternative contemporary art. In this creative project, the usual expectations of theatre are broken. This starts with the entry of performances into urban spaces that are not generally thought of as stage spaces. The informal atmosphere of the performances, close to that of a concert, is greatly helped by the participation of musicians and video artists who improvise together with the actors based on the text. In this way, two significant reversals take place: on the one hand, the non-stage spaces themselves take on a new appearance in the eyes of the spectators, and on the other, the unconventional, sometimes provocative environment of the performances creates a new vision of the possibilities of theatre as well.
